Building Impact Literacy: Research Impact Training for University Staff and Students

Supporting researchers and professional services staff to better understand REF and the research impact landscape

As universities face growing expectations to demonstrate the impact of their research, many are realising that impact isn’t just a REF submission or a metric to chase - it’s a way of working. But for impact to be embedded in academic culture, we need more than case study templates and compliance training.

In response to this challenge, I was commissioned to develop an internal Research Impact learning module aimed at building the confidence, understanding, and capability of staff and students involved in research.

A focus on accessibility and relevance

The goal was to create a flexible, interactive resource that could introduce core impact concepts while also supporting users at different stages of the research journey - from early-career researchers to professional services teams. It needed to demystify terms like pathways to impact, logic models, and reach and significance, while keeping things practical and grounded in real-world academic work.

Collaborative development process

The module was designed in close consultation with the university’s research and impact teams, as well as with input from teaching staff. It was important that the resource supported both individual reflection and team-based learning, so the design included:

  • Scenario-based exercises illustrating impact in different disciplines

  • Branching content tailored for research-active staff, doctoral students, and those in support roles

  • Practical tools and templates that could be downloaded and reused in proposal writing or evaluation

Feedback loops were built into development, with a steering group providing iterative input on clarity, tone, and alignment with institutional priorities.

What the module delivered

Hosted on Moodle, the final module offered:

  • A clear introduction to what research impact is - and isn’t

  • Examples of impact across disciplines and sectors

  • Guidance on planning for impact, evidencing outcomes, and aligning with REF

  • Interactive content to support active learning and diverse learning styles

  • Downloadable templates and checklists for immediate application

The module was built not only to inform, but to build confidence - helping users feel equipped to plan for, track, and articulate the impact of their work.

Why this matters

Too often, research impact is treated as a reporting requirement. But impactful research starts earlier - in the questions we ask, the people we work with, and the ways we design for use. Training like this helps institutions move beyond reactive reporting and toward a more embedded, values-led approach to engagement and evaluation.
